Port Maquarie, Australia

December 15, 2005

Port Maquarie highlights:

-The best fish and chips we've ever had.
-Really nice car mechanics
-Lots of kids surfing at the local beach
-Watching the almost-full moon rise over the ocean
-Nichole's first pelican sighting
-Petting and learning about koalas

We had to stop and spend a day here in Port Maquarie while we wait to get our camper fixed. We had phoned ahead from Sydney to have a new battery waiting for us here, and that all worked out, but the new battery isn't charging, so we have to get the relay replaced. A bit of a headache, but hopefully that will be the last of it.

We went to the Koala park yesterday and got to play with the cute little buggers. We learned that koalas have two thumbs on each paw, they sleep 18-20 hours a day, they're not stoned off eucalyptus, they do ferment eucalypt leaves in their stomach and their lazy manner is a result of the poor energy content of the leaves.

It's hard to get in the christmas spirit down here in the sun and beaches - even with the christmas music playing and decorations up, and scooter driving postmen wearing santa hats. The whitest christmas you get here is a white sand beach! Which isn't all bad. My brother Obie and his wife Shelbey and little Cooper are on their way down here tomorrow, and we're really excited to see them up at Noosa Heads where we'll be spending the Winter/Summer solstice and Christmas.

That's about it.

From Port Maquarie, where the fish is tasty, the car mechanics are friendly, and all the koalas are above average.
Love to everyone!

"Australian" is still a foriegn language to Nichole. She had better luck with the "Hinglish" spoken in India!

Australia seems to really agree with you two. What a beautiful adventure there. Glad to hear the vehicle problems have subsided! It's finally warmed up a bit in Boulder, but notta-whole-lotta compared to the warm joy you're in. Miss you. Can't wait 'til you're home. Love love...
