Ljubljana, Slovenija

August 30, 2005

We took a bit of a rest day yesterday - did laundry, got caught up with "travel chores", etc. Spent some time sightseeing around Maribor, then took the train today from Maribor to the capital (Ljubljana). When we got our tickets checked, the lady said something about a bus, but we didn't quite get it, and we almost got left behind in La?ko! For some reason we're still not sure of, we had to take a bus for about 15 minutes, then got back on the train for another hour to Ljubljana.

We're staying at the Celica Hostel which used to be a prison, and they converted the cells to rooms. We were very lucky Tanja was able to get us a reservation for a cell as there are only a limited number of them & the usually book up months in advance. Miller luck again. Each cell is decorated uniquely by a different artist. The whole place is really cool. We're downstairs in the commen area right now with a very loud, but very cool local band playing. Quite a scene.

We wandered around Ljubljana this afternoon, had an amazing dinner at a totally random place Nichole picked to eat at. The owner was incredibly nice, and took terrific care of us. A real treat!

Tomorrow we're planning on catching the train to Zagreb (the capital of Croatia) then down to Split on the Dalmatia coast.

Love to everyone!
NICHOLE: The hostel Celica is the the hippest place I have ever been in. Really amazing art showing in one room and live music in another. I bit of bad choice to stay and sleep at though because the party doesnt end because Luke and I are tired! After waking up we poked around outside the hostel to find the absolute coolest place either Luke or I have ever seen. Art everywhere on every surface. Urban, rogue, wabi-sabi... Entire buildings covered in mosaics, beautifully presented graffiti, found art, recommissioned junk. Little coffee shops and bars. We cant say enough about this place so check out the pictures.
